Oh the joys of summer
When our days of school were through
To be done with tests and homework
Think of all a boy could do.
Picnics with my sisters.
Swimming in the pond.
Running in the orchard
Or playing on the lawn.
Sitting on the porch.
Climbing in the trees.
Resting on a hill top,
Getting cooled off in the breeze.
Ridding on the tractor.
Exploring in the woods.
Walking to our little church
Each Sunday as I should.
Wondering at the rainbows.
Excited in the storm.
Finding little baby birds.
We never did them harm.
Hoeing in the garden.
Hoping one day soon
To be eating watermelon
Till inside there’d be no room
Exploring along the creek.
Watch till crawdads show.
Then poke them with a stick
And watch them really go.
In the pond I'd see
The bugs all spin about.
In crazy little circles
Going in and out.
What fun to find the Touch Me Nots
and make the seeds go pop.
I'd touched almost every one
Before I’d want to stop.
When evening came
We grab a jar and poke holes in the lid,
Then run about catching lighting bugs.
This was fun for just a kid.
Catching grasshoppers was quite a trick.
They would hop and fly.
Although we were so careful
Many times we'd have to try.
Chasing butterflies thru the grass
As they flew about the flowers,
Were happy ways
We spent the summer hours.
When we had worked real hard,
We would wash off in the pond.
The water was so cool
Of this we were quite fond.
It was a treasured gift
Picking flowers for our mother.
I'm glad we had a way
To show love for one another.
My Mother had a planting
Of Sweet Williams in the yard
I still remember the smell
I don't have to try too hard.
There was a tree of brown pears
Upon the orchard hill.
Waiting for those sweet pears
Was a definite summer thrill.
As summer's days were ending
we be heading back to school.
The summer days were always great
That seemed to be the rule.
